Bon Jovi’s cousin, Jody Joseph, is an inspirational singer

If you’re at all familiar with Natalie Grant, you know her for her powerful song, “Held.” I love that song very much, so when I found out another artist had covered it, I had to hear it.

Jody Joseph does an understated version of “Held” on her new “On My Way Home” EP. Her textured voice reminds me of Cyndi Lauper. The over-the-top energy that Grant brings to “Held” is not how Joseph handles the song—she keeps it low-key and subtle. As a fan of the song, I enjoy both Grant and Joseph’s versions.

Besides covering “Held,” two things about Joseph that made me want to tell you about her include: 1) She’s a distant relative of the great singer Mario Lanza (ask your grandparents who he is) and 2) She’s the first cousin of none other than Jon Bon Jovi!

It turns out that inspirational music is just one of Joseph’s interests. She is well-known in the New York City/New Jersey area for performing Stevie Nicks and Janis Joplin songs in tribute shows! She’s also a vocal teacher.
